The idea for this shoot came to me while walking through the miniature portrait section of the Victoria & Albert Museum (which is one of my favorite places in London, and maybe the universe). There's something really special about the tiny paintings, from the more intricate and realistic, to the simple shadow portraits, i really like the idea of cramming so much detail and beauty into such small golden frames. It sort of makes no sense...
I really respond to the intimacy of it, the fact that in order to fully appreciate a mini portrait you have to physically get close to it, examine. After studying every last one, i knew i wanted to shoot really personal feeling victorian style portraits. Although I didn't hold onto the "mini" aspect, i tried to embody the private-ness of the paintings by shooting two young girls, perhaps sisters, and their strange relationship. I wanted the viewer to feel like they were almost intruding by looking at them, as if the images were something you'd come across in your grandmothers box of memories. I really think i learned a lot from this shoot as i chose to make it "my baby" and do everything from the production, to the editing and retouching of the images, to the graphics. It was a lot of pressure, but overall i think the final product was really successful.
